Essay 1- Charter Analysis

Some people are very strange. Such as Montresor from the “The Cask Of Amontillado” by Edger Allen Poe.  In this story Montresor portrays many different charter traits. Such as Cruelty, Vengefulness, and cleverness. Montresor murders his friend because of an insult. He chains him to a wall (in his catacombs/vaults) and leaves him there to die. Most people can’t murder someone. But Montresor shows some charter traits that can (drive him to). He is a mad man but seems perfectly normal to the outside world.

Most people are cruel at some point in their life. But Montresor was so cruel he murders his own friend. “I had fettered him to the granite…throwing the links about his waist was about a few seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist” (178). “I began vigorously to wall up the entrance…” (778). He left his friend for dead. He was very cruel to even his friend. Which well all are guilty of at some point. But most of us don’t have the heart to commit murder.

A majority of the clever people in this universe use their brains for good not evil, but not always. Montresor had a perfect plan to kill Fortunato. “He had a weak point… Fortunato…his connoisseurship in wine” (174). Then he said to trough him in that he “hade received a pipe of what passes as Amontillado” (175).  Then he says “I was silly enough to pay full amontillado price without consulting you…” (175). Then he invites him over to come and try some. The Montresor gets him drunk and chains him to a wall and leaves him to die. Montresor like a lot of people was a very clever man but an evil one.

Montresor was a very vengeful person. Like most of us at a point in our life when we feel betrayed or insulted. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I borne as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge… I must not punish, but punish with impunity” (174). Some people are more vengeful than other. Most people don’t kill for revenge though.

Montresor was very vengeful, cruel, and clever. More so when it came to the death of Fortunato. He had impunity when it came to the murder as well.  Because where he murdered Fortunato no had been in decades and wouldn’t be going there any time soon. So no one would ever know that Montresor did it. So to the world he seemed completely normal but was a murder.
